TV Gal Wants Your Nominations
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Please allow me to put this in technical writers' terms -- you guys totally rock.

I can't thank you enough for participating in the call for categories of the Amy Awards. A special shout-out to TV Gal reader Gennie who diligently helped tally the results on the message boards.

Now, remember in the Amy Awards you pick the categories, the nominations and the winners. Here are the guiding principles for the 12 categories. Out of your most popular categories, I picked 12 unique ones to give the Amy Awards some variety and 12 categories that would produce five viable nominations. I also removed any current character names from the category title since they might bias the awards (alas, every award cannot be named after Seth Cohen). I also collapsed some that were very similar into one category (hence worst guest star and worst new character are now in the same category). In some cases, I used category titles from past seasons, but when possible, I used your very clever category titles.

The 12 categories are listed on the message board. Post your nominations to each category. Remember the nominations must be shows (either network or cable) from this season. Some of you may still miss "Buffy" (I know I do) but it's not eligible for any nominations this year.

Here are the 2004 Amy Award Categories:

1. Tell Me It's Not Over; aka Beloved Show (either new or seasoned) That Was Cancelled
2. The Amnesiac Cougar Award; aka Most Ridiculous Storyline or Plot Twist
3. The Bennifer Award; aka TV's Worst Couple
4. Get Off My Show; aka Worst New Character or Guest Star
5. Rewind, Let's Hear that Again Award; aka Best Quote
6. Til Death Do Us Part; aka Best Death or Character Exit
7. Emmy, We Don't Need No Stinkin' Emmy; aka Great Performance that Probably Won't Be Recognized
8. Character You Love to Hate and Hate to Love; aka Best Villain
9. Did I Have a Life Before This Show; aka Best New Show
10. I Want that Hour (or Half-hour) of My Life Back; aka Worst Episode of the Season (can include season or series finales)
11. Episode Most Worthy of an Immediate Rewind; aka Best Episode of the Season (can include season or series finales)
12. It's Like a Freaking Car Wreck; aka Best Guilty Pleasure
13. Fat Lady is Singing But Nobody Is Listening; aka Show that should be cancelled

You have until Friday, June 19 at 5 p.m. to post your Amy Award nominations to the TV Gal message boards. I'll announce the nominations next week.

New Shows this Week

You have to love FOX for blatantly ignoring network scheduling convention and premiering even more new shows this week. It's almost enough to make me forgive them for "The Swan." Almost.

  • "North Shore" (premiering Monday, 8 p.m. on FOX): Think "Las Vegas" in Hawaii except not as clever. James Remar (Richard on "Sex and the City") is like the James Caan of The Grand Waimea Hotel. There's nothing really wrong with the series -- impossibly good-looking people, beautiful setting, problems befitting a nighttime soap (ex-lovers forced to work together, etc.) -- but there's nothing here different enough or interesting enough to make you want to tune in every week. Kristoffer Polaha (last seen playing John F. Kennedy, Jr.) is the hometown hunk who manages the hotel while Brooke Burns makes sure the guest are happy. Cliches and stinted dialogue abound, but again, since it's summer, I'm willing to give the show a chance. Especially because, although she doesn't appear in the pilot, Amanda Righetti (that's Kirsten's sister Hailey on "The O.C.") will play the hotel concierge. For right now let's give the show two and a half VCRs out of five.

  • "The Casino" (premiering Monday at 9 p.m. on FOX): From executive producer Mark Burnett, this series is more "The Restaurant" than "Survivor." Thirtysomething millionaires Tim Poster and Tom Breitling take over ownership of the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino in downtown Las Vegas. Since the hotel is well established (it opened in 1946), this show is mostly about Tim and Tom putting their own mark on a Las Vegas legend (they want to make it retro hip) and the often seedy tales of Las Vegas. Suffice to say that some things that happen in Vegas should definitely stay in Vegas. My problem is that I get way too embarrassed for some of the guests. Three VCRs.

  • "Quintuplets" (premiering Wednesday at 8:30 on FOX): The worst part about this show is that we all know how clever and talented Andy Richter is and it's hard to see him slumming it in a pedestrian show like "Quintuplets." The series is a mishmash of television cliches (over-sexed teens, under-sexed parents) and uninspired writing. Suffice to say I never need to hear a teen talk about the "rumble in his jungle." One VCR.

  • "Method & Red" (premiering Wednesday at 9:30 on FOX): Although this show is still uneven and has a lot of work to do, it is already clever and, surprisingly, heartfelt. A la "Fresh Prince," the hip-hop moguls move into a posh New Jersey suburb and have their neighbors in an uproar. Sure there's quite a lot "look at the funny white people" going on, but the two title stars have charisma and they're quite funny. Plus, you can't help but love Anna Maria Horsford (Thelma on "Amen") as Method's mom. Three and a half VCRs.

Where Have I Seen Them Before?

Jonathan Tucker, the teen in the movie "The Deep End" and the boy who found out he was abducted as a baby in a story arc on "The Practice," was the tripped-out teen who killed himself at the beginning of "Six Feet Under."

Melissa Marsala is Federico's annoying sister-in-law Angelica. We also saw her this season as the scantily clad White House employee assigned to help out Toby on "The West Wing."

And in a nice bit of continuity, Myndy Crist was Dana, the woman crying at Lisa's funeral lamenting all the friends she's lost in the past couple of months. Crist first played Dana on April 6, 2003. Remember? Her friend died outside a television studio.

    Highlights of the Week Ahead
All times listed are Eastern Time for June 14 to 20

So it turns out I am not the only C. Thomas Howell fan out there. So many of you wrote to remind me that Lori Loughlin and Howell starred in the 1985 teen flick "Secret Admirer." And upon further very important research I found out that Howell and Loughlin were oh-so-briefly married in the '80s. I must have blocked that from my memory. I also would like everyone to pause and reflect on how utterly fabulous Loughlin looks. She looks better now than she did 10 years ago on "Full House." This week on "Summerland" (Tuesday, WB, 9 p.m.), Bradin experiments with drugs.

"Sex and the City" repeats begin on TBS Tuesday night at 10 p.m. First up is "The Real Me" which featured Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) memorably strutting down the aisle at a charity fashion show. Look for Stanford Blatch to utter one of my all time favorite lines (I'm still kind of mad he wasn't in the finale). I've seen some of the edited episodes and they are quite seamless. While the series was filming, additional, less racy footage was shot. So if you didn't know for a fact that comedienne Margaret Cho spent the entire episode swearing, you won't find anything missing in her still hilarious performance. Starting next Tuesday (June 22), TBS will air the entire series in order with two back-to-back episodes each Tuesday at 10 p.m. and encoring each Wednesday at 10 p.m. Now if you're virgins to the series, look out for the Carrie's heartbreak of season 3. It remains the best work the series ever did.

Reality romance series are skewered in "Joe Schmo 2" (premiering Tuesday at 10 p.m. on Spike TV). Tim Walsh and Ingrid Wiese, are fooled into thinking they are participating in the romance dating show "Last Chance for Love." The genre is ripe for relentless mocking and it's quite impressive that everyone manages to keep a straight face during the "pearl necklace eviction ceremony." But here's the best part -- Ingrid appears to be one smart cookie. I'm rooting for her to realize that something is not quite right in the state of her reality show.

Hey, ya. Andre 3000 guest stars on the season finale of "The Shield" (Tuesday, FX, 10 p.m.)

After spending more than $100,000 at one clothing store, Paris and Nicole embark on a road trip from Miami to Beverly Hills in "The Simple Life 2" (Wednesday, FOX, 8 p.m.). They beg strangers for money and take financial advantage of their first host. But the real reason I'm not a fan of the show is because Paris and Nicole look perpetually bored with life -- the Hilton heir, in particular, appears to be sedated.

The defective detective goes to New York City in the third-season premiere of "Monk" (Friday, USA, 10 p.m.). Monk is in search of clues to his wife's murder, but, of course, he gets sidetrack into solving another crime. It's not the best episode ever (and there's a street sounds of Manhattan joke that goes on for far too long), but Mykelti Williamson (Fearless on "Boomtown") guest stars -- what more could you want? Now am I the only one rooting for Sharona and Randall to get together this season?

That's all for today. I'll be back next week to announce the 2004 Amy Awards nominations and to talk about the new season of "Nip/Tuck" and the premiere of TBS' "Outback Jack."
